4.) Once you have clicked on the relevant box, the following menu will appear. In this example we are laying a horse named Not Left Yet at odds of 1.94.

It is possible to change these odds, after all the smaller the price, the less money you are risking. However it is important to remember that the acceptance of your bet depends on the willingness of others to take the odds you are offering so if you aim too low, you may not match your bet.

5.) Next, insert the amount you are willing to lay at those odds. In this example we have suggested £200, this means that a potential backer would be betting £200 with you at odds of 1.94.

If the horse was to subsequently lose you would win £200, however in the event of the horse winning, you would lose £188 - a figure calculated for you and displayed beside the stake and at the bottom where your total liability is shown.

When you are happy with your bet - click the 'submit' button at the bottom of the page.

6.) Now your bet is confirmed the race will appear like this, showing, alongside each runner, the amount you will win (in green) if that horse wins and in the case of Not Left Yet, the amount you will lose (in red) if it wins.

It is worth noting that a good position to be in on Betfair.com is one in which the green numbers heavily outnumber the reds.

Now simply sit back and cheer on the other runners!
